Alvin Crawford
Singing Technique
Alvin Crawford hails from Toronto, Canada where he has performed with the Canadian Opera Company in numerous productions. He has also performed in Europe with Volksoper Wien (Sarastro in The Magic Flute) Staatstheater Kassel in Germany (Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos and Alvise in La gioconda, The Father in Hansel und Gretel). He has performed with American opera companies such as Cincinnati Opera and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. He has also been heard as the Loudspeaker in Der Kaiser von Atlantis at the Spoleto Festival in Italy and in Los Angeles with the LA Phil conducted by James Conlon. Crawford has sung under the batons of Julius Rudel, Sir Andrew Davis, James Conlon, Randall Behr, and Christopher Hogwood, with whom he had the pleasure of making his Kennedy Center debut as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. Crawford made his Carnegie Hall debut as the bass soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
Alvin is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has taken part in the Juilliard Opera Center. While at Juilliard he was heard as Tiresias in Oedipus Rex, the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, and Zaretzky in Eugene Onegin. Crawford is a Metropolitan Opera National Council regional winner and an Opera Index Encouragement winner.
TV/Film credits include Pray for me, Paul Henderson and Clarence for CBC and the motion picture It Runs In The Family with Michael Douglas. His singing voice is heard on the soundtrack of the popular independent film Trick as well as the feature Hit and Run.
On Broadway He has been heard as Sam Cooke in The Buddy Holly Story, John in Miss Saigon, The Lion in Candide and Mufasa in The Lion King. Regional credits include Bobo in the play A Raisin in the Sun directed by the legendary Phylicia Rashad at Westport Country Playhouse, Odysseus in The Odyssey with The Globe Theater, Andre in Martin Guerre at The Guthrie Theater, and Famous Orpheus at the Ge’Va Theater.
